Not sure which type of refrigerator is best for you? Here is a guide to help you understand your options.

Fridge Size

The first thing you need to do when shopping for a new refrigerator is measure your space (not your old fridge) to know what dimensions will fit.

Width

The width of the space where the fridge will go may vary, so measure the top, middle, and bottom of the space (such as wall to cabinet, wall to countertop, or cabinet to cabinet) and note the smallest one. Leave at least a ½ inch on all sides and if the space is next to a wall, you’ll want to leave at least 3 inches on the hinge side so the door can swing open.

Height

Measure from the floor to the lowest point above your fridge cutout, this may be the bottom of overhead cabinets. Be sure to account for the added height of any door hinges at the top of the refrigerator.

Depth
  • Standard-depth: Standard-depth refrigerators have a larger dimension from front to back, offering more capacity. They typically range from 29 to 36 inches and are available in all styles. Measure from your wall with some extra room to extend past your cabinets.
  • Counter-depth: Counter-depth fridges tend to be shallower to achieve a more streamlined, built-in appearance, but they may be wider or taller. They typically range from 24 to 28 inches deep and most are French door or side-by-side style. Measure from your wall to the edge of your counter.

When measuring depth, leave at least 1 inch between the back of your fridge and the wall for proper ventilation, and be sure to make note of baseboards and any electrical outlets. If your kitchen has an island, measure the space in front of the fridge so you can fully open doors and drawers without any obstructions.

Fridge Capacity

Refrigerator and freezer capacity refers to the volume of the inside of the appliance, i.e. how much food can be stored inside. Fridge capacity is expressed in terms of cubic feet.

Refrigerator capacities range from 17 to 25+ cubic feet.

  • 17-21 cubic feet is typically ideal for households of 2-4
  • 22-24 cubic feet is typically ideal for households of 4-6
  • 25+ cubic feet is typically ideal for households of 6-8

Fridge Style

Another factor to consider is the look of your new refrigerator. Ask yourself, what color will match the rest of your kitchen and what style will work best for your household? Whether you prefer black, white, or silver or side-by-side, or top-freezers — Rent One has got you covered! We’ve broken down the most common types of refrigerators below.

side by side fridge

Side-by-Side

Side-by-side refrigerators have slim double doors that open at the center with a refrigerated section on one side and a freezer on the other. Generally, the fridge side is bigger than the freezer side. This style provides more freezer space compared to other types and it is easier to keep the freezer organized since you won’t have to stack food like you would have to in a drawer.

Pros

  • Have plenty of shelves for organized storage
  • Most have built-in external ice and water dispensers

Cons

  • Narrow design makes it difficult to store wide items
  • Additional freezer space means less fridge space

Top-Freezer

Top-freezer refrigerators are a timeless choice with their classic design. They are generally a less expensive option compared to other styles because they are more energy-efficient.

Pros

  • Wide shelves to store large refrigerated items
  • Use less energy, thus cheaper to operate

Cons

  • No pull-out freezer drawer
  • No external ice and water dispensers
